OCIA (formerly RCIA) is a nine month program preparing participants for full communion into the Catholic Church, which occurs at the Easter Vigil. We welcome all non-Catholics including those who are just interested in learning more about the Faith. Sponsors who are in full communion with the Church are needed.
OCIA provides an opportunity to learn more in order to make an informed decision for those interested in entering into full communion with the Catholic Church. Once that decision is made, preparation for the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation and Reconciliation take place.
Sessions begin in September and continue through May. If you are interested in coming into the Catholic Community or helping others in this process, please contact Joe Chrisman at [email protected]
OCIA adapted for children is designed for children who have not received the sacraments of Christian initiation – Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist. During this time they prepare for these Sacraments, or, for those already baptized in another Christian tradition, for reception into the Roman Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. The sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession, Penance) is celebrated before Easter.
When do classes meet and what is covered? These meetings are on a case-by-case basis. We will focus on the sacraments, faith community, service, prayer and basic beliefs and practices during specified class times. Your child will be pulled from his/her regular Religious Education class or if enrolled in the school will attend these classes.
When will children receive the sacraments? All children who are ready will receive the sacraments at the Easter Vigil – the Saturday night before Easter.
How do I enroll my child? Please contact the parish office for more details.
What is required of a child? Regular attendance at Mass and Sunday classes as well as active participation in class discussions and activities. All children will need a sponsor who is a practicing Catholic and member of the Catholic Church who will be able to be present at the Easter Vigil. Your child must be enrolled in Religious Education or attend Holy Name school.
The RCIC team includes not only the RCIC teachers, but most importantly, the RCIC parents. The true success of the program depends on the parents. The parent must insure the child attends all classes, learns their prayers, and experiences a Catholic environment at home.
